"Coupling Cube"
"Coupling Cube"
In the late 2000's I started making pieces with styrofoam. The shapes were spheres, eggs, cubes and eventually my own shapes. Styrofoam has a wonderful shiny finish but is far too soft to last so I came up with a finish using 3 coats of white glue and 5 coats of acrylic polyurethane in matte, satin and gloss finishes. Finally I worked my way to paper mache, which proved to be a very durable material. It also made the pieces more illusionistic. My paper mache pieces now stand at over 50 sculptures and growing. Coupling Cube stands on top of cast iron plumbing coupling with thin aluminum sheeting hose-clamped to the coupling. This piece presents an illusion of being unbalanced. The cubes are for scale reference. H 14.5” x D 5” x W 5” 2020
